Vol. 276 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Educational Grants.

88.

asked the Minister for Education when an educational grant will be paid to a student (name supplied) from County Meath who is attending the College of Physical Education, Limerick.

Mr. R. Burke

A higher education grant has been awarded to this student and the first instalment of £120 was forwarded to her on 19th November, 1974. The balance of the grant will be paid to her in two instalments of £90 each in January and April, 1975.

Why did she have to wait so long to get the first instalment?

Mr. R. Burke

She applied on 23rd August, 1974, to the secretary's office of Meath County Council. As that council do not administer grants to that college, the application was forwarded to the Department of Education for processing on the 28th October, 1974. We have just paid it.

I know where the delay was.

89.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in deciding on the application of a person (name supplied) in County Kerry for a post-primary educational grant in respect of his daughter to which she appears to be clearly entitled.

Mr. R. Burke

This application for boarding school maintenance has had to be investigated locally. The pupil concerned lives within the range of the transport services to a centre at which free education for day pupils is available and accordingly she is not eligible for boarding assistance. The pupil's father is being informed accordingly.
