Vol. 279 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Pollution.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he proposes to increase the maximum penalties under the Fisheries Consolidation Act, 1959, for persons convicted of polluting rivers and streams and thereby causing the destruction of fish life; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While I would be prepared to consider increasing the penalties for fisheries pollution I do not think that the time is opportune for promoting the necessary amending legislation. I feel that it would be desirable to await receipt of the final report of the Inland Fisheries Commission which may deal with this subject and submit recommendations.
