Vol. 280 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Employees.

17.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when he expects that Aer Rianta will have completed the take-over of the sales and catering employees at Shannon Airport, County Clare.

The former sales and catering organisation at Shannon was merged with Aer Rianta on 1st April, 1973. On that date the employees of the organisation became Aer Rianta employees.

Is it not a fact that there are still some employees who have not been absorbed?

As late as a week ago it was.

The former sales and catering organisation at Shannon was merged with Aer Rianta on 1st April, 1973.

Is the Minister not aware there are people working in the flight kitchen and in the duty free shop under the sales and catering organisation who have not yet been absorbed by Aer Rianta and were not absorbed as late as a week ago?

This is a fact.

It is not. If they were former employees of the sales and catering organisation they are now Aer Rianta employees and have been since 1st April, 1973.

Is the Minister not aware that one employee in particular has been working for sales and catering as a supervisor for 25 years and it is only a week ago he was offered revised conditions for being absorbed into Aer Rianta?

All the staff has been absorbed since 1st April, 1973. That is a fact. Every employee of that organisation is now an employee of Aer Rianta. There may be negotiations going on with the union as to the slotting of employees within the Aer Rianta range, but these are negotiations that will be going on continually because of union demands for re-grading and so forth. It is no part of the conditions of absorption that these should be settled first. The employee is employed by Aer Rianta since 1st April, 1973, and has been employed by Aer Rianta for over two years now.

A number of employees in the flight kitchen and the duty free shop have not yet signed accepting the conditions offered to them. These conditions were offered to them for the purpose of their absorption into Aer Rianta but they have not accepted and they have not signed. Surely, then, they cannot be absorbed.

They have been employees of Aer Rianta apparently for over two years.
