Vol. 281 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Workers.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice the steps he proposes to take to protect hospital workers from assault.

(Cavan): The gardaí are always willing to discuss the problem with the people concerned and I am informed that they are having discussions at present with representatives of some hospital workers who have approached them.

Is the Minister aware that considerable concern has been expressed in the media and by the trade unions regarding incidents of violence especially at night? If the Department of Justice do not provide adequate protection for the staffs concerned, would the Minister make representations to the Minister for Health with a view to money being made available for the employment of a security firm?

(Cavan): This is a matter for the gardaí and they, at present, are having discussions with representatives of some hospital workers in the light of complaints received.

The Minister will agree that the matter is a serious one?

(Cavan): I agree.
