Vol. 283 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Dublin Postal Services.

47.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the latest statistics available to his Department in connection with housing development in the Springfield area, Tallaght, County Dublin, on which the decision not to provide an additional sub-post office in the area was taken.

My Department's information is that there are at present approximately 1,400 houses in the area mentioned. As I said in answer to a previous question from the Deputy on the same subject on 5th February last, the general area concerned is still in course of development and the need for additional post office facilities is being kept under close review.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when a second post office may be provided in the area?

I can tell the Deputy that the post office needs of the Tallaght area as a whole—and it is considered that these are serious— are currently being comprehensively examined. I have asked my Department to complete this examination as soon as possible and I will advise the Deputy of the results of the examination as soon as I have them.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the latest statistics available to his Department in connection with housing development in the Limekiln Farm and Greenpark Estates, County Dublin, on which the decision not to provide an additional sub-post office in the area was taken.

My Department's information is that there are approximately 1,500 houses in the Limekiln Farm/Greenpark area. As I said in answer to a previous question by the Deputy on the same subject on 24th April last, the provision of an additional post office would not be warranted because Walkinstown and Perrystown sub-offices are both only about ¾ mile away. The position will be kept under review in the light of further development in the general area. I have already referred to that examination.

I am very sorry that this reply is similar to the reply to my last question. A considerable number of representations have been made to me and I am sure to other Deputies in the area by the local residents' association. Quite a number of houses in this estate are local authority houses and the people there are not in a position to provide themselves with transport. Therefore the facility of a sub-post office in the area would be very much appreciated and it is something that is required.

I understand the Deputy's concern, and his representations and those of other Deputies will be borne in mind as this examination proceeds. As I told the Deputy, I am anxious to have it completed as soon as possible.
