Vol. 284 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Currency Exchange Rate.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to review and alter the rate of exchange of Irish currency with that of other currencies; and, if so, when.

In the course of my financial statement to the House on 26th June, I stated at some length the Government's attitude on the exchange rate question, making it clear that no alternation was contemplated in present circumstances. The position is being kept under constant review.

Can the Minister give us any idea what the circumstances might be when such a change would be contemplated?

I have already on several occasions set out the circumstances which might justify a change in the exchange rate. One of the factors which would necessarily have to be brought under control before any change would be our own rate of inflation.
