Vol. 284 No. 4

Written Answers. - CIE Fare Reductions.

165.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why the reduction in CIE transport fares is not being applied to the commuter train service between Dublin and Drogheda, County Louth.

The budget measures announced by the Minister for Finance on 26th June, 1975 included provision for subsidy for CIE to enable the reduction, with effect from 28th July, 1975, of the board's fares on Dublin city bus services, road passenger provincial services and Dublin and Cork commuter rail services to the levels which obtained before 12th May, 1975. No provision was made for a reduction in mainline rail fares.

I have been informed by CIE that the commuter rail services in Dublin embrace the area from Balbriggan to Greystones. The fares in respect of these services have, therefore, been reduced to their pre-May 12th level. The mainline rail passenger fare structure applies to the rail passenger services between Dublin and Drogheda and accordingly the fares on these services will not be reduced.
