Vol. 284 No. 4

Written Answers. - Salmon Drift Nets Damage.

166.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that drift net fishermen have considerable trouble with coasters going through their nets during the salmon drift net season; and if he will ensure that steps will be taken to have the skippers of these vessels avoid the fishing area during the salmon run from 1st May to 15th August.

I have read reports of a recent incident off the Mayo coast involving fishermen whose nets were cut by a cargo vessel.

Under the provisions of the Collision Regulations (Ships and Seaplanes on the Water) Order, 1965, vessels engaged in fishing are required to display certain warning lights and signals so as to enable other vessels to take necessary avoiding action in good time. Under the same regulations vessels not engaged in fishing are required, when under way, to keep out of the way of vessels engaged in fishing.

I am arranging for the issue of a marine notice to both the merchant marine and fishing interests drawing their attention to the need for compliance with the regulations.
