Vol. 284 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mayo Industries.

167.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA have been successful in securing an industry for the second advance factory built over 12 months ago in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo.

I understand from the Industrial Development Authority that they have recently approved a project for the factory. The machinery and equipment is to be installed in the next few months and production is expected to start early next year. The employment potential is about 40.

168.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the IDA have secured any industry for the proposed advance factory for Westport, County Mayo.

169.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if extra land has been purchased for the establishment of industry in Westport, County Mayo.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 168 and 169 together.

I have been informed by the Industrial Development Authority that an industry has not yet been approved for the proposed advance factory, construction of which is expected to start in September subject to planning permission being obtained. In the meantime the authority are continuing to make a special effort to attract industry to the town. In the past fortnight, three industrial promoters have visited the area.

I have also been informed by the authority that they have been endeavouring to acquire extra land in Westport in conjunction with the Mayo County Council. I understand that investigations into the availability and suitability for industry of a particular tract of land is being undertaken at present.

170.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a site has been purchased for the establishment of an industry in Keel, Achill, County Mayo.

I have been informed by the Industrial Development Authority that they have not, to date, purchased a site for industry in Keel.

The authority are, however, seeking to secure a suitable industrial site in Keel and recently, in conjunction with Mayo County Council, looked at possible sites. The council are now to investigate in more detail the availability and suitability of one of these sites.
