Vol. 286 No. 12

Written Answers. - Land Commission Land.

182.

asked the Minister for Lands if land in the possession of the Land Commission will be made available to farmers in Counties Mayo, Galway and Roscommon for the growing of beet and potatoes for the Tuam factory and to maintain employment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Cavan): Yes. In 1975 the Land Commission made land available to beet growers in conacre following a joint request by the sugar beet and vegetable section of the Irish Farmers' Association and Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teo. This year a similar arrangement is being made with the addition that potato growers will also be included.

The Land Commission also agreed that the letting of land for tillage purposes would not be relied on as a reason for instituting proceedings for compulsory acquisition.
