Vol. 287 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking of Lorries.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in consultation with the various local authorities and the Garda Commissioner, he will make regulations under the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 to 1968 to restrict the parking of heavy lorries in residential areas in order to eliminate danger particularly to young and old people.

As indicated in my reply to the Deputy's question of 28th October, 1975, powers are available under the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 and 1968 enabling the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána by means of bye-laws made by him after consultation with the local authority concerned and with my consent to control and regulate the parking of vehicles of any class in respect of any specified area. It would not, therefore, be appropriate for me to make statutory regulations to deal with a problem of a local nature which can be dealt with by local bye-laws.

It is not being done.

Deputy Lemass should take it up with the local authority in his area. It is not my responsibility.

Is it optional on local authorities?

Local authorities have got permission. If the local authorities do not want to do anything and the members will not make them do it, of course it is optional.
