Vol. 287 No. 8

Written Answers. - Staffing of Dublin Schools.

125.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that Scoil Íosagáin, Christian Brothers School, Parnell Road, Dublin, is short of teachers and that slow learners have little chance of becoming properly educated in a class of over 40 pupils; and if, in view of the fact that there are a number of teachers unemployed, he will arrange for some of them to be recruited for this school.

The number of teachers authorised in any national school is related to the average number of pupils enrolled in the school, in accordance with provisions which are of general application throughout the national school system. Scoil Íosagáin has its full complement of teachers under those provisions plus a remedial teacher who is additional to the normal quota of teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the urgent need to retain the existing quota of teachers at St. Lawrence's primary school, Kilmacud, County Dublin; and the action, if any, he intends taking in the matter.

I met representatives of the board of management of this school recently in relation to the position which had arisen following the resignation of one of the teachers in the school. I explained to them that the figures of average enrolment for the appointment of a successor to the outgoing teacher had not been reached and that accordingly it was not possible under the rules for national schools to sanction a permanent succession appointment. However, because of the fact that a reduction in the teaching staff as from the re-opening of the school after the Christmas holidays would give rise to serious problems in the re-organisation of the school for the remainder of the school year, I have authorised the appointment of a temporary assistant until 30th June, 1976.
