Vol. 287 No. 8

Written Answers. - Fire Service Report.

185.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has considered the report on the fire service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The report of the working party on the fire service was published on the 19th July, 1975. The report was published without commitment so as to afford an opportunity for the widest possible consideration and comment. Particular matters raised in the report will be considered when the process of consultation is completed, and in the light of the views received.

In the meantime, the service will continue to benefit from various ongoing programmes such as those relating to fire stations and appliances. All local authorities have been exhorted to step up their fire prevention work and that aspect of the service will continue to have my close attention. A special sub-committee of the Local Government Manpower Committee have been set up to consider and advise on what changes are desirable and practicable in the short term, in the central training arangements for fire service personnel.
