Vol. 288 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Council House Repairs.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that, in view of the flexibility being exercised by county councils in the matter of repairs to council houses being vested, his letter dated 5th May, 1975, to county councils containing strict limitation of such repairs has created anomalies and grave discontent; and if he will permit county councils to revert to their traditional style of repair work.

Under section 106 of the Housing Act, 1966, a local authority is required to put a tenanted dwelling into good structural condition prior to the sale of the dwelling to the tenant. On 14th April, 1967, a circular letter was issued to local authorities containing guidelines on the works considered appropriate to section 106. On 5th May last, my Department wrote only to Cork (North) County Council drawing its attention mainly to the necessity to adhere to these guidelines, and indicating in particular that works outside that range would not rank for Exchequer subsidy.
