Vol. 289 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Grant Allocations.

93.

asked the Minister for Local Government the criteria used in allocating moneys to individual counties in road fund grant allocations.

In allocating grants from the Road Fund this year, I increased the block grant to each county council by approximately 25 per cent. I also brought all road authorities within the block grant system. The allocation to each authority for the upkeep of national roads was increased by approximately 20 per cent. The purpose in allocating these increases was to help road authorities, who are responsible for drawing up their own programmes of expenditure, to protect the employment of road workers through the selection of labour intensive schemes. The remaining balance of funds was allocated to the completion of important improvement works in progress by individual authorities and to a small number of new improvement works urgently required in the traffic and safety interest.

Question No. 94 withdrawn.
