asked the Minister for Labour the total amount spent by the Government as a result of International Women's Year; and if he will give a breakdown of the amount.
Written Answers. - International Women's Year.
The total amount spent on the programme from the Vote of my Department was in the region of £10,000. As the accounts for some of the projects have not yet been finalised, it is not possible to give a final figure.
A breakdown of the £10,000 figure is as follows: grants towards cost of seminars, conferences, exhibitions, a schools essay competition, a careers film and research, £7,500; cost of sending delegates to the Women's International Conference in Mexico organised by the United Nations; cost of sending delegates to the Women's International Conference in Brussels organised by the Belgian Government; cost of official reception to inaugurate the international programme of activities for International Women's Year and miscellaneous expenses, £2,500.
As I have indicated, the emphasis in the programme was on activities which would advance the status of women in a practical way. Accordingly, a number of activities undertaken by Government Departments and other organisations in the course of their activities during the year but which were specially promoted to honour International Women's Year are not reflected in the expenditure figure quoted.
