Vol. 289 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Jobs.

5.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the recent statement about 1,000 jobs for Galway means that that number of new jobs will be provided within the next two years; and if he will give details.

The total number of jobs planned to arise from these projects within the next two years is approximately 500—Thermo King, 300, and Blue Bell, 200. The Thermo King project is scheduled to reach full production by 1985 when it is expected that 835 new jobs will have been provided.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say if the purport of the Deputy Leader's speech the other day has been conveyed to the principals of these firms? He implied that the system of economic expansion is doomed to failure and will not be the success in the future that it was in the 1960s.

That is a broadening of the question.

Is there one factory giving 200 jobs and another 300 jobs in the next two years?

Is the factory giving the 200 jobs the same factory which was debated here three weeks ago when we asked the Minister to keep the 165 employees in employment until negotiations had been completed?

The firm providing 200 jobs is Blue Bell, Incorporated. It has two locations, one in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, in an IDA advance factory and the other in Galway city in the factory occupied until recently by Vecta Limited. It is hoped in the case of the latter that many of the employees can be taken on in the new concern.

Question No. 6.

All of them, and there will be no new jobs created.

Order. I have called the next question.

(Interruptions.)

It was a very solid achievement in these times to obtain industrial investment of that scale here and I am quite certain——

(Interruptions.)

I have called the next question.
