Vol. 289 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle and Beef Exports.

9.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the steps he has taken to offset the increase in Irish MCAs on the cattle and beef shipped to the Continent.

I have repeatedly pointed out in the Council of Ministers the adverse effects which the MCA charges have had on Irish exports, especially cattle and beef, and on five occasions I have obtained devaluations of the Irish green £ with resulting reductions of the MCAs payable. I will continue to press in the Council of Ministers that representative rates be kept as far as possible in line with the rates quoted for currencies on the foreign exchange markets. In this, my primary concern is the cattle and beef sector.
