Vol. 290 No. 3

Written Answers. - Price of Pint.

29.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to the present price of a pint of the various brands of stout, beer and lager, the breakdown in money and percentage terms of the various elements that make up the price.

The only elements for which I am responsible in prices are those ascribable to excise duty and to value-added tax. The information requested by the Deputy in respect of these elements is set out in the following tabular statement.

Retail Price per pint

Duty Content (as a % of retail price)

V.A.T. (as a % of retail price)

Stout

38p

15.3p

3.45p

(40.3%)

(9.09%)

Beer

39p

13.8p

3.55p

(ale)

(35.4%)

(9.09%)

Lager

44p

16.1p

4.00p

(36.6%)

(9.09%)

It should be noted that the duty, in percentage terms, and VAT elements are based on average retail prices applying to public bars in the Dublin area. It would not be appropriate to furnish the Deputy with information regarding the duty content for individual brands of stout, ale etc., due to the confidentiality of the information.
