asked the Taoiseach the level of private investment in manufacturing industry in each of the past six years.

The only relevant information in the Central Statistics Office is that collected in the annual Census of Industrial Production. This relates to the purchases of fixed capital assets in manufacturing industry, irrespective of source of finance. The estimated total purchases of these assets in each of the years 1970 to 1973 were as follows:—

1970 —

1971 —

£79 million

1972 —

£117 million

1973 —

£119 million
