Vol. 297 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pupil/Teacher Ratio.

61.

asked the Minister for Education the number of secondary schools in the current year where the teacher/pupil ratio is (a) above and (b) below the 20:1 ratio laid down by his Department; the name of each school in category (a) and in category (b), with the pupil/ teacher ratio of each; and the number of teachers whose jobs are at risk as a result of the ending of the five-year phasing-out period originally allowed to secondary schools for bringing their pupil/teacher ratio down to 20:1.

There are at present 61 secondary schools in which the number of teachers in receipt of incremental salary from my Department is in excess of the number permitted by the quota regulations. The number of teachers involved is 87. Because of increasing enrolments many of these teachers will be absorbed within the quotas of their schools in the 1977-78 school year. In any other case I will be prepared to examine the situation as sympathetically as possible with due regard to the particular circumstances of the school. At present there are 131 schools in which the teaching staff is less than that which could be employed within the quota regulations. Secondary schools are private institutions and it would not be in accordance with normal practice to furnish the names of the individual schools in which the number of teachers is either in excess of or less than that authorised in accordance with the quota provisions.
