Vol. 300 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Shipping Vessels.

5.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport whether he proposes to take any steps to encourage Irish Shipping to develop new vessel construction; and, if so, if he will furnish details.

My Department have had preliminary discussions with Irish Shipping Limited about the possibilities open to the company for the development of their shipping interests and the creation of additional employment. I understand that the company are considering proposals for the expansion of capacity on the Irish Continental Line's Rosslare/Le Havre route but since these proposals have not yet been finalised I am not in a position to give details.

It is the Government's aim that the State-sponsored bodies should continue to play an important role in the development of the economy. The future policy of Irish Shipping Limited and the means by which the Government can best assist their development will, therefore, be matters for continuing consultation between my Department and the company in the coming months. Any proposals for development in the shipping sector will, of course, have to take account of the scale of investment involved in the acquisition of new vessels, the current serious slump in the world shipping industry and the need to operate on a commercial basis.

In view of the continued success of Irish Shipping, I would ask the Minister to be more specific. Is it not appropriate at this time that Irish Shipping should consider expanding their fleet and commissioning new vessels which would have a very big impact on employment in the Irish ship building industry and shipping in general?

The company are considering certain proposals but a number of things must be taken into consideration. I can add nothing further.
