Vol. 301 No. 8

Written Answers. - Post-Mortem Payments.

425.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will sanction payment to lay persons who assist at postmortems immediately after the postmortem is carried out rather than after the inquest which may not be held for quite a long time after the postmortem.

My sanction is not required for individual payments under the Coroners (Fees and Expenses) Regulations. Section 58 of the Coroners Act, 1962, provides that a coroner may issue a certificate for the payment by a specified local authority of any fee or expenses which is or are prescribed under the Act. Nothing in the Act or in the fees and expenses regulations requires the coroner to wait until an inquest is held before certifying the fee of a person who performs or assists at a post-mortem.
