Vol. 302 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Information Centres.

18.

asked the Minister for Health the number and location of community information centres functioning around the country at present; the average grant paid to each; and what measures are taken for the periodic review of the work of these centres.

There are 68 community information centres around the country at present. I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to circulate details of their locations with the Official Report.

In 1977, an average operating grant of £195 was given to each centre. An additional £100 was given to each new centre towards the cost of furnishings and equipment.

The National Social Service Council are responsible for registering community information centres. Registered centres are required to meet certain standards of registration and their adherence to these standards is kept under constant review by the council. Each registered centre is required to submit regular statistical returns showing the numbers and types of queries received for a given period. Centres are also required to submit annual financial accounts to the council. The staff of the council visit local centres regularly to assist them in maintaining and improving their standards of service.
