Mr. P. Barry

asked the Minister for Finance the numbers employed (a) directly and (b) indirectly by (1) his Department, and (2) agencies under the aegis of his Department on 1 January 1977, 1 July 1977, 1 January 1978; and the numbers expected to be employed on 1 January 1979 on the basis of current estimates.

A considerable amount of indirect employment is generated by the Office of Public Works, and this is increasing with the injection of additional money into the offices building programme but it is not possible to quantify the numbers involved.

The following is the information sought:

In addition to the foregoing a number of contractors are engaged by the Forest and Wildlife Service on cartage, transport of road materials and on the provision of machinery generally. Such contract work is irregular and difficult to quantify.

1 July 1977: 569

1 January 1978: 557

At this stage it is not possible to forecast employment as at 1 January 1979.
