Mildly mentally handicapped children are catered for both in special schools and in special classes attached to ordinary national schools. In special schools there are 3,372 children enrolled and 2,304 in special classes, including a total provision for 5,676.
No separate allocation of funds is made in respect of this area as these schools and classes are an integral part of the national school system.
The targets in regard to the provision of school places set by the Commission of Inquiry on Mental Handicap in 1965 have been satisfied and any further necessary provision and improvement of facilities will be made according as needs are identified.
