Vol. 307 No. 9

Written Answers . - School Closure .

171.

asked the Minister for Education if he will identify the two schools which were indicated by him in his reply to Question No. 163 of 16 May 1978 as having been in receipt of capital grants; and if he will explain what is meant by the phrase "unexpired portion" in relation to one of the grants concerned.

: It would not be in accordance with normal practice to identify the two schools in question.

With regard to the clarification requested by the Deputy, the position is that the life-span of a prefabricated classroom is calculated to be ten years. Should the accommodation not be used for school purposes for the whole of that period the school authorities are required to refund one-tenth of the State grant for each year of non-use.

172.

My Department do not keep a register of schools indicating the name of the religious authority in charge of each school.

It would not be in accordance with established practice to state the number of teachers, whether religious or lay, by reference to individual schools who are in receipt of incremental salary at any particular time.
