(Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for Education (a) his Department's normal cost limits per square metre for community, secondary and vocational schools on 1 February 1978 and 1 January 1979 and (b) the percentage increase for said cost limits from February 1978 to January 1979.

The basic building cost limit for second level school building financed by my Department was £142 per square metre of floor area from 1 February 1978 and £176 per square metre of floor area from 1 January 1979, an increase of 23.8 per cent. There is also an external works allowance of a maximum of 12.5 per cent of basic building cost.
