Vol. 313 No. 1

Written Answers. - Farmers' Fuel Oil Supplies

275.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy in view of the present unsatisfactory situation his plans to ensure that farmers obtain adequate supplies of fuel oil which is now in heavy demand due to seasonal cultivation work in progress; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As is generally known there is at present a shortfall in oil supplies of about 5 per cent across the board, the shortfall being greater in some products than in others. Steps to minimise the effects of this shortfall by reducing demand where possible are under consideration.

The oil companies are fully cognisant of their responsibilities for ensuring adequate supplies of oil and oil products and I am satisfied that they are discharging these responsibilities to the best of their ability. If, however, the need to establish priorities in the use of oil arises, special attention will be paid to the needs of the farming community arising out of seasonal cultivation work.
