Vol. 314 No. 5

Written Answers. - Southern Cross Motorway.

285.

andMr. Kelly asked the Minister for the Environment if he will itemise and give full details of any proposals for the Southern Cross route motorway contained in his recently announced plans for development over the next decade, with particular reference to the costings for and timetabling of, such provisions.

I have made provision in the Road Development Plan which I announced on 4 May 1979 for a new ring road in the south and west county which generally will incorporate the route known as the Southern Cross route. As the execution of individual works involved in the project is dependent in each case on the state of preparedness by Dublin County Council in regard to planning, land acquisition and so on and the Government's overall assessment of the priority ratings which should be given in any year to the competing demands for public funds, I am not in a position to give the detailed information requested by the Deputies. Dublin County Council, however, have already commenced construction work on the section of the route in the west county linking Tallaght Road with the Naas Road in respect of which I have made the appropriate road grants available.

andMr. Kelly asked the Minister for the Environment if and when he will make funds available to the Dublin County Council for the purchases of land along the proposed line for the Southern Cross motorway.

I notified Dublin County Council on 3 October 1978 of my approval in principle to the council's proposals for a new road on an alignment running between the Naas Road at Red Cow and Harolds Grange and to the council proceeding with detailed planning for the route. Furthermore I have already provided grants totalling £1.385 millions to meet the construction and land acquisition costs of a section of the route which has been planned by the council. The question of providing finance for construction and acquisition costs of further sections of the route will in each case be considered when details of an acceptable scheme have been received from the council.
