Vol. 315 No. 16

Written Answers. - County Longford River Drainage.

87.

andMr. L'Estrange asked the Minister for Finance if he received a submission from Longford County Committee of Agriculture in relation to the drainage of the river Camlin, if so, when and the content of the submission; and the action taken or proposed to be taken.

In January last I received a submission from a working committee of local bodies containing proposals for interim drainage improvement work on a part of the Camlin River.

The Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, under which the Commissioners of Public Works derive their powers for drainage work, provides that drainage work under the Act should be done on a catchment basis. The works proposed by the local committee could be considered therefore only as part of a comprehensive scheme for the Camlin River catchment area. That catchment area is listed for attention but the preparation of a scheme for it along with many other tributaries must await a solution to the overall Shannon flood problem.
