Vol. 316 No. 3

Written Answers. - Blood Pressure Recording Machines.

423.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that a number of do-it-yourself blood pressure recording machines are on display in shopping centres and other areas for public use; if he is satisfied that it is in the best interest of the public that these are available and if not, the measures, if any, to be taken to control their general availability.

I am aware that some do-it-yourself blood pressure recording machines for public use have been installed in shopping centres and other areas. Their use is not likely to be harmful and could be helpful in keeping a check on blood pressure between visits to a doctor. One danger is that users of these machines might regard them as being a suitable basis for self-diagnosis and might not consult their doctors about their blood pressure. However, notices are affixed to the machines which warn users that the machines are not substitutes for the checking of blood pressure by a doctor. The Irish Heart Foundation feel that, on balance, they are of benefit.
