Vol. 318 No. 9

Written Answers. - Navan Special School.

16.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of money (a) granted and (b) paid to the special school for mildly mentally handicapped children at Athlumney, Navan, County Meath in 1979 and 1980 and the date such payments were made.

This school caters for moderately mentally handicapped children and the money granted in 1979 and 1980 fell into the following categories:

A Operating Costs:

(i) Staff salaries (teachers and child care assistant): 1979, £14,988.07; 1980, £3,462.31. Paid on a regular monthly or quarterly basis.

(ii) Capitation grants towards operating costs: 1979, £772.50 granted and paid; 1980, £463.65 granted and paid.

(iii) Grant for audio visual aids: 1979, £48.75 granted and paid.

B Capital Costs:

(i) In January 1979 a grant was sanctioned towards the cost, estimated at £12,000, of adapting and furnishing the premises used as a school, subject to the execution of the usual official lease vesting the premises. Payment of this grant cannot be made until the required evidence of title to the site has been furnished by the local parties.

(ii) A grant towards the cost of providing physical education equipment was sanctioned in November 1979. Payment of the grant is in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works and I understand that it will be made very shortly.
