Vol. 325 No. 1

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

361.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service, which was applied for three years ago, will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Donegal; and the reason for the delay.

Because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the district it is unlikely that it will be possible to provide service before the end of next year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a coinbox telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service, which was applied for three years ago, will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Donegal; and the reason for the delay to-date.

Service will be provided within the next three weeks or so. Because of the volume of engineering work on hands in the district it was not possible to provide service earlier.

364.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs his proposals for the provision of an automatic telephone service to meet the needs of the people of Killenaule, Thurles, County Tipperary; the extent of the service being provided; when it will be in operation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is proposed to convert the manual telephone service in Killenaule to automatic working in the second half of 1982. Subscribers there will then have local and subscriber trunk dialling (STD) facilities similar to those available at present to other subscribers with full automatic service. International subscriber dialling (ISD) will not be available, at least initially.

365.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephone kiosks in the North Dublin city area; the number of such kiosks installed in each of the last ten years, whether he intends to provide extra kiosks; if so, the location of such kiosks; and when they will be erected.

The number of telephone kiosks in the north Dublin city area is 265. The number provided in the last five years was: 1976, 11; 1977, 1; 1978, Nil; 1979, Nil; 1980 — to 31 October — 4.

Figures for the years previous to 1976 are not readily available. It is proposed to provide seven additional kiosks in the area in 1981 as follows: Beauvale Estate, Beaumont; Glin Court, Coolock; St. Gabriel's Road, Dollymount; Northway Estate, Finglas; Cardiffbridge Road, Finglas West; St. Mary's Terrace, Mountjoy Street; St. Vincent's Court, Whitehall.

Additional kiosks will be provided in subsequent years according as the need for them arises.

366.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service which is urgently needed will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny.

Service cannot be provided until congestion in the local trunk exchange is relieved. It will be at least a year before this relief is given.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the likely dates the post office exchanges at (i) Ring, (ii) Cappagh and (iii) Old Parish, County Waterford will become automatic.

An automatic exchange will be provided at Ring about mid-1981. It will also serve the Old Parish area.

It had been expected that it would be possible to convert Cappagh exchange to automatic working about the same time as Ring but because of delay in the provision of the building, this will not, regrettably, now be possible. The current forecast is that the automatic exchange at Cappagh will be available about the end of 1982.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state, with reference to each of the Dublin postal districts the number of telephone applicants requested to lodge the connection fee in the past three months; the amount of the fee, including rental in advance, etc., the number of these applicants connected in September, October, November and the number proposed to be connected in December and in January, February, March, April and May 1981 or later; the reason for collecting connection fees so far in advance of connection; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information asked for is not readily available in the form requested, and would take some time to compile.

It is estimated, however, that in the three months, August, September, October 1980, the latest months for which statistics are available at present, service was offered to about 6,500 applicants in the 01 area. Telephones installed during these three months totalled 5,200, representing broadly the equivalent of the number who entered into agreements for provision of service when offered it in that period.

The connection fee in respect of a new exchange line is £100. Rental, £73.64 a year for a business line and £68 a year for a residence line, in respect of the minimum period of the agreement is also collected in advance.

Applicants are asked to enter into agreements for provision of service, involving payment of connection fees etc. only when the Department is satisfied that service can be provided within a reasonable time, usually within three months of completion of the agreement. In the exceptional case where, for unforeseen reasons, e.g., if the cable is found to be faulty when installation work is undertaken, it is not possible to provide service within this time, the advance payment is refunded on request.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin.

Service is dependent on the provision of cabling which, because of the volume of engineering work requiring attention in the Dublin area, is unlikely to be completed before the end of next year.

371.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in providing a telephone service for a person (details supplied) in County Donegal, who needs a telephone service as an essential part of his business.

It has not been possible to meet this application because of the volume of work on hands and awaiting attention in the district. It is expected that service will be provided within the next four months or so.

372.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when telephone service will be restored to a person (details supplied) in County Meath, as there has been no service since 19 August 1980.
