Vol. 326 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Donegal TV Reception.

245.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that RTE 1 is unobtainable in most of the Fanad area of County Donegal and that there is only reasonable reception from RTE 2 whereas the reception from BBC 1 and 2 and UTV is perfect; and, in view of the fact that RTE have a booster aerial in the area, if he will explain the fault and indicate the steps he proposes to take to have the matter corrected.

RTE say that there is no fault on the Fanad transposer which at present broadcasts RTE 1 only on 405 lines. Viewers in the Fanad area who are equipped with television sets capable of receiving on the 625 line UHF standard may be able to receive RTE 2 from the transmitter at Holywell Hill.

Subject to successful international coordination of the necessary frequencies RTE plan to provide a 625 line, VHF colour service for RTE 1 and RTE 2 from the Fanad transposer within the next few months. RTE will announce full details of the arrangements and commencement dates to the trade and the public through the media as soon as possible and will, as usual, provide technical advice to viewers in the area.
