Vol. 326 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ownership of Geodesic-domed Structures.

255.

asked the Minister for Transport whether the geodesic-domed structures on Mount Gabriel, County Cork, are owned by, or under the control of, a foreign Government; if so, the Government concerned; and the purpose of the structures.

The structures referred to by the Deputy are part of a Secondary Surveillance Radar Station located on the top of Mount Gabriel, near Schull, County Cork. The station is owned by Eurocontrol, an international organisation of which Ireland is one of seven member states. The station monitors aircraft movements in the upper airspace (i.e. above 24,500 feet) within a radius of 240 miles. The station is operated by Ireland on behalf of Eurocontrol.
