Vol. 330 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mayo Water and Sewerage Schemes.

474.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a recommendation from Mayo County Council in respect of the appointment of a contractor for the Kilkelly sewerage scheme; and when sanction will be given to commence the scheme.

I have not received a recommendation from Mayo County Council on the appointment of a contractor for the Kilkelly sewerage scheme, and I cannot, at this stage, anticipate when the relevant sanction will issue to the local authority.

475.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the extensions to Charlestown sewerage scheme, County Mayo, particularly as there is a considerable saving on the original contract.

My Department has conveyed sanction to the proposed extensions of the Charlestown sewerage scheme, to Mayo County Council.

476.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the defective water supply in Killala, County Mayo; and if he will take steps to remedy the matter.

I am aware of the deficiencies of the existing water supply in Killala arising from the level of local water demands. On 26 August 1981 Mayo County Council submitted proposals to alleviate the problem by arranging for the Mellick group water scheme, which is at present served by the Killala public water system, to secure an alternative supply at an estimated cost of £9,500. These proposals are under examination. I would hope that my Department would be in a position to convey a decision to the local authority in the near future.

477.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction stage 2 of Killala sewerage scheme, County Mayo.

Contract documents for this scheme submitted by Mayo County Council in March 1981 are under consideration in my Department. The proposals for this scheme must be considered in the context of the amount of capital available for water and sewerage schemes and the number of such schemes in progress or getting to construction at the present time including the following schemes in County Mayo: Castlebar (Lough Mask) Water Supply Scheme; Charlestown/Ballaghy Sewerage Scheme; Achill Island Regional Water Supply Scheme — Stage 4A; Claremorris Temporary Water Supply Scheme; Tourmakeady Water Supply Scheme.

Accordingly, I cannot at present indicate when I may be in a position to convey a decision to Mayo County Council regarding their proposals for stage 2 of the Killala Sewerage Scheme.

478.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the contract documents for Ballina regional water supply scheme, stage 3, County Mayo.

Contract documents for two of the five contracts for phase 1 of stage 3 of this scheme have been submitted to my Department by Mayo County Council and are under examination. I cannot indicate, at this stage, when I may be in a position to issue a decision to the local authority in relation to the overall contract documents for stage 3.
