Vol. 330 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Programme.

578.

asked the Minister for Education when he expects work to commence on the extension to a school (details supplied) in County Galway.

Sketch plans have been prepared by the Office of Public Works for a general purposes room for Scoil Náisiúnta Chlochar na Trócaire, An Spidéal.

At a recent meeting in the Department the school authorities expressed the view that accommodation for a sixth assistant would be required soon, together with additional toilet facilities. It appeared from this that a general purposes room alone would be inadequate for the future needs of the school. Therefore, the Department's inspector is being asked for a report in the matter taking into account the limited extension possibilities of the existing site. The Department would then have to decide on the most appropriate way of dealing with the accommodation needs of the school.

579.

asked the Minister for Education when work will commence on improvements to a school playground (details supplied) in Co. Galway.

A site extension is required to allow of the provision of a ballcourt at Scoil N. Mhuire, Clochar na Trócaire, Cárna, Co. na Gaillimhe. A site extension has been offered by the school authorities and their solicitor is in correspondence with the Chief State Solicitor concerning title to this land.

When satisfactory title has been established and an official lease has been prepared, the planning of the ballcourt may proceed.

asked the Minister for Education when the proposed extension works for Ballycanew national school, County Wexford, will take place.

The Commissioners of Public Works are at present examining the tenders received for the proposed extension to Ballycanew national school, County Wexford. I understand that their examination is nearing completion and that they expect to be in a position to place a contract at an early date. A prefabricated classroom is being supplied to the school to allieviate accommodation difficulties while the permanent extension is being provided.

584.

asked the Minister for Education when work will commence on the extension to Carn national school, Garranard, Ballina, County Mayo.

Sketch plans for an extension comprising three new classrooms and the conversion of the existing Carn national school to a general purposes room and ancillary accommodation were received in my Department from the Commissioners of Public Works on the 14th of this month. These plans are now under examination from an educational point of view and it is anticipated that an early decision on them will be conveyed to the commissioners. The question of sanctioning a grant towards the cost of the project awaits the submission by the chairman of the board of management of good title to the extension of the site which he has secured. As soon as the question of title has been cleared up the matter will be progressed as quickly as possible.

585.

asked the Minister for Education when he will sanction and pay a grant for repairs and an extra prefabricated room for Lissaniska national school, Knockmore, Ballina, County Mayo.

A grant was sanctioned by my Department towards the provision of a prefabricated classroom at Lissaniska national school on 24 April 1981. I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that payment was delayed because the room in question was provided without securing planning permission. The necessary permission was submitted to the commissioners on 22 October 1981 and the question of payment of the grant is receiving attention.

My Department expect to be in a position to sanction a grant shortly towards improvement works which have been carried out at the school.

586.

asked the Minister for Education when work will commence on the extensions to Currabaggin national school, Knockmore, Ballina, County Mayo.

My Department have sanctioned the provision of an extension comprising two classrooms and a general purposes room at Currabaggin national school, County Mayo. The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to proceed with the planning of this project. It is not possible at this early stage of planning to say when building work may commence.
