Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

160.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in Carlow town and county in 1980, 1981 and the first three months of 1982; and the areas in which the telephones were installed.

Records are not kept in a form that would enable this information to be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of staff time. It may be helpful to the Deputy to know that the numbers of telephones installed in Portlaoise engineering district which includes Carlow town and County were: 1980, 3,300; 1981, 4,000; 1982 (Jan-Mar), 800.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephone applicants granted priority in Kilkenny in 1980, 1981 and the first three months of 1982; and the occupation of the people who received priority.

Records are not maintained in a form that would enable this information to be obtained readily and its compilation would involve a disproportionate amount of staff time.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider paying the installation charge for telephones for old age pensioners who qualify for the free telephone rental allowance and who are not in a financial position to pay the installation costs.

Any extension of the telephone rental subsidy scheme to cover the connection charge is a matter for the Minister for Social Welfare.

167.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants waiting for the installation of telephones; and the date of the longest standing application.

About 85,000. The longest standing application was received in 1974.

168.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when his Department hopes to eliminate the waiting list for telephones.

It is planned under the current telephone development programme to eliminate the waiting list nationally by the end of 1984. The waiting list has, in effect, been eliminated at a number of centres already and the number of such centres will be increased gradually over the period until all are in that position by the end of 1984.

169.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inordinate delay in installing telephones in the Adrigole area of County Cork; and if he has any plans to improve the situation.

I am aware of the position regarding Adrigole.

Necessary engineering work to enable applications in the area, the earliest of which date from 1980, to be met is expected to be completed about the end of this year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in meeting the application by the Brother Superior of a school (details supplied) in Dublin for a telephone service in the school and sports centre in view of his stated concern to provide a degree of priority in such cases; and when it is likely that a service will be provided.

There has been telephone service at the school for a considerable time.

An additional line will be provided within about a month.

Service will be provided at the Sports Centre as soon as possible but it is unlikely that it will be possible to do so for about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in installing a telephone for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who applied in 1976.

It has not been possible to provide service for the person named so far because of the large number of applications on hands and requiring attention in the Meath area.

It is expected that service will be provided within about six months.
