Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

209.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the new pay telephones recently installed in kiosks are not functioning; and if anything can be done to make them more foolproof so that they cannot be vandalised.

The new payphones incorporate a number of features such as specially strengthened plating designed to make them more resistant of vandalism and, in general, they are less subject to damage than the older types of kiosk telephones they replaced. However, there is no way in which they can be rendered totally immune to malicious abuse. My Department review experience with payphones regularly and will take whatever steps they can to minimise disruption of service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in providing a telephone service for a person (details supplied) in Blanchardstown, County Dublin; when a service will be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It has not been possible to provide service for the person named so far because of the volume of engineering work on hands and awaiting attention in the Dublin area.

It is expected that service will be provided within about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone will be repaired for a person (details supplied) in Ballymun, Dublin, as it has been out of order for over three weeks now.

(Donegal South-West) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the manual telephone exchanges in South West Donegal which are due for conversion to automatic (a) before the end of 1982 and (b) during 1983.

It had been planned to convert the exchanges at Ballintra, Donegal, Inver, Laghey and Mountcharles this year. The conversions were, however, dependent on the bringing into service by mid-1982 of the Sligo/Donegal/ Letter-Kenny Radio Link to provide the necessary trunk outlets to carry traffic to other parts of the country. Unfortunately this did not prove possible and the conversion of the five exchanges has had to be deferred until 1983.

In addition to the five exchanges already mentioned, Bunbeg, Dungloe, Glenties and Gweedore will also be converted to automatic working in 1983.
