Vol. 338 No. 3

Written Answers. - Government's Unemployment Policy.

374.

andMr. Enright asked the Minister for Finance if he will comment on the Government's policy in relation to reversing the growing unemployment problem; the specific measures to counteract present trends as evidenced by recent statistics; and if the Government are still committed to their various undertakings and pledges in this area.

The reversal of the current upward trend in unemployment is the primary economic and social objective of the plan The Way Forward published by the Government on 21 October. This objective will be achieved by an improvement in cost competitiveness brought about through moderation in the development of incomes and other costs, supplemented and supported by a series of sectoral policy measures as set out in the plan. Specific measures to contain unemployment are described in Chapter IX of the plan.

The Government are committed to the attainment of the maximum level of sustainable employment and are fully determined to adhere to the strategy outlined in the plan.
