Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Milk Antibiotic Residues.

77.

asked the Minister for Health the level of antibiotic residues detected by his Department's inspectorate in milk supplied for human consumption; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The testing of milk for antibiotic residues is carried out by the Department of Agriculture which monitors milk in dairies and at pasteurisation premises. I understand that my colleague, the Minister for Agriculture, has replied to a similar question from the Deputy.

The Deputy will be interested to know that, at my request, the Food Advisory Committee is at present reviewing the position as regards antibiotic residues in milk and meat. The findings of the committee will be considered by my Department in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture.
