Vol. 340 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scoileanna Ghaeltachta na Gaillimhe.

28. D'Fhiafraigh

den Aire Oideachais an bhfuil sí sásta go bhfuil gach aon ábhar i ngach aon rang i scoileanna i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe á theagasc trí Ghaeilge seachas teagasc an Bhéarla féin; agus an dtabharfaidh sí ráiteas faoin mheán teagaisc atá á úsáid sna scoileanna sin.

Do réir an eolais atá ag an Roinn níl ach dhá bhunscoil atá suite i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe nach bhfuil teagasc in gach ábhar, seachas an Béarla, trí mhéan na Gaeilge iontu.

Níl gach aon ábhar i ngach aon rang sna scoileanna iarbhunoideachais i nGaeltacht na Gaillimhe á theagasc trí Ghaeilge. Sí an Ghaeilge an meán teagaisc is forleithne sna scoileanna sin, ámh, gan teagasc an Bhéarla agus na nuatheangacha Eorpacha, ar gnách iad a mhúineadh cuid mhaith trína meán féin, a chur san áireamh.

Nach gceapann an tAire nach ceart go mbeadh scoil ar bith sa Ghaeltacht nach mbeadh gach ábhar á mhúineadh trí mheán na Gaeilge? An bhfuil aon rud á dhéanamh aige faoin dá scoil nach bhfuil sé sin amhlaidh iontu?

Is oth liom a rá nach bhfuil an Ghaeilge go flúirseach agam. If the Deputy has no objection—

The Minister said there are two primary schools in the Gaeltacht where instruction is not through the medium of the Irish language. Is he unhappy with that situation, and does he propose to have the situation remedied?

I will give the Deputy the information at my disposal. In relation to the general question at the moment, there is a committee set up by my Department, with representatives from the Údaras and the Department of the Gaeltacht, to examine in detail education within the Gaeltacht areas and to examine youth and other matters relevant to education. In relation to the Deputy's specific question, there are difficulties in that school. At this stage a meeting is being arranged between the principal, the bishop and other interested groups to try to iron out the difficulties which have arisen. I am sure the Deputy is aware of the problems there and that there were some disagreements about the appointment of the principal. I hope in the not too distant future this problem will be resolved to everybody's satisfaction.

I take it that it is the intention to teach through the medium of Irish in Gaeltacht areas in future?

I can give the Deputy that assurance.

The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for next Tuesday.
