Vol. 340 No. 4

Written Answers. - Westmeath Garda Medical Examinee.

461.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath was recently turned down at a Garda medical examination; if he will be given another opportunity; and, if so, when.

Limerick East): In accordance with the Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, the medical examination and certification of candidates for entry to the force is a matter for the Garda surgeon or a medical practitioner nominated by the Minister for Justice.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the person concerned was medically examined by the surgeon on two occasions and was not certified to be of the required medical standard. I understand that the Garda authorities have informed the person concerned, in writing, of the surgeon's findings at both examinations and that if he forwards a medical certificate, before 1 October 1983, indicating that he has attained the required standard, a further and final medical examination will be arranged.
