Vol. 342 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Phoenix Park Personnel.

11.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of people employed in the Phoenix Park in 1983; and the number employed in 1980.

The number of people employed in the Phoenix Park on 1 January 1983 was 112 and the number employed on 1 January 1980 was 129.

The Minister of State indicated that there were more people employed in the Phoenix Park in 1980 that there are at the moment. Is he happy with that position?

In explanation for the decrease in numbers I want to say that on 21 July 1981 there were 117 people employed and there were some vacancies. Two vacancies arose after 21 July. There was an embargo at that time which meant that only every third was replaced. The number employed on 23 December 1981 was 150 and only one out of three vacancies arising could be filled. Three vacancies have arisen since 23 December and arrangements are being made to fill the vacancy of assistant storekeeper.

According to the Minister of State, there are 17 people fewer employed in the Phoenix Park than there were in 1980. The condition of the park has deteriorated——

Ask a question, Deputy, please.

I would like to ask the Minister of State to increase that number to 129, which it was in 1980, so that the park will be kept in proper condition.

I do not accept that the park has deteriorated.

Would the Minister of State indicate if the park enjoys the services of a park superintendent?

The park superintendent retired in October and arrangements are being made to fill that position. An offer has been made to a person within the park service and I am hopeful that it will be filled in the near future.
