asked the Minister for Justice the steps he proposes to take to eliminate the large backlog of cases for the High Court in Cork.

Limerick-East): It is the function of the President of the High Court to arrange the distribution and allocation of the business of the High Court and it can be taken that in doing so he takes into account the needs of particular areas.

The delay in hearing cases in Cork cannot be isolated from the problem of delays — particularly in jury cases — in the High Court generally. However, having regard to the fact that delays in Cork have in recent times become somewhat more serious than elsewhere, I understand that the President is paying special attention to the Cork situation and in fact proposes to increase by some 50 per cent the number of sitting days in Cork during the forthcoming legal year commencing on 3rd October next.
