Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - Withdrawal of Turkish Troops from Cyprus.

358.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the over-whelming vote in the UN General Assembly on 13 May which called for the immediate withdrawal of Turkish occupying troops from Cyprus, he will request the other member states of the EEC to introduce sanctions against Turkey, and particularly to agree to withhold military supplies until such time as all Turkish troops have been withdrawn.

Ireland has at all times expressed its support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Cyprus: it is for that reason that we have deplored and continue to deplore the Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island.

The Government's view is that the best hope for progress towards a resolution of the problems of Cyprus lies in the inter-communal talks which have been taking place with the help of special representatives of the UN Secretary General. The Government do not believe that, in present circumstances, sanctions against Turkey by the member-states of the EEC would be either appropriate or helpful.
