Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - Printing Potential.

721.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the efforts that have been made to identify a specific area of printing which could be established in this country as a form of import substitution; and if he will make a statement on the potential for printing in this country.

Over-capacity in the general printing industry has been identified and it is not IDA policy to consider grant assistance for companies in this sector. The localised nature of the market ensures that competition in the sector comes mainly from firms operating within the home market.

However, where a company can demonstrate potential for import substitution, where Irish companies do not have the technical ability or capacity to compete at present, or where new or increased exports are a distinct probability, the IDA would be willing to consider assistance.
