Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial Disputes.

731.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of strikes during the past six months; and the resultant loss in financial terms to the nation.

The Central Statistics Office are the official source of statistics relating to industrial disputes but up-to-date figures are not yet available from that office. My Department estimate, however, that 70 strikes occurred in the six month period ended June 1983.

Computation of the losses involved in industrial disputes in terms of production, tax revenue and so on would be extremely complex. To attempt to answer the second part of the question a very detailed study of each individual dispute would be necessary.
