Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Sandyford Road (Dublin) Gas Main.

331.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will amend the statutory powers of the Alliance and Dublin Consumers Gas Company to enable them to move the gas main along Sandyford Road, County Dublin, underground in view of the danger to the public of a surface main.

The question of amending the statutory powers of the Alliance and Dublin Consumers Gas Company for the purposes of laying this pipe underground does not arise. The company, in common with all other town gas undertakings, have adequate powers under section 6 of the Gasworks Clauses Act, 1847, for the purposes of laying pipes in public streets and roads.

I am informed by the company that in order to minimise inconvenience to road users they purpose to lay the pipe underground when the Dublin County Council ground widening scheme which is planned for the area gets under way.

I am assured by the company that the pipe is of a safe and accepted material and joint type for the distribution of natural gas and in no way constitutes a danger to the public.

However, in order to allay any further fears which local residents may have, the company intend to encase the entire length of pipe which is above ground, about 150 metres, in concrete.

Question No. 332 postponed.

Question No. 333 withdrawn.
